Spaying and Neutering

Although there are an estimated 100 million cats and dogs kept by responsible and caring people in the United States, there are also a tragic number of animals who suffer horrid cruelties associated with abandonment. In Colorado alone over 40,000 abandoned animals a year are put to sleep due to overcrowding, disease, and behavioral issues. Animal shelters in the U.S. euthanize about 5.1 million such abandoned pets each year. Uncounted millions more suffer sickness, exposure, starvation and death.
Colorado Animal Rescue Shelter is a no-kill facility, focusing on the prevention of pet overpopulation. Since it opened its doors in 2000, CARE has assumed a leadership role in the Roaring Fork Valley by advocating low-cost spaying and altering as the most effective means of preventing the births of unwanted dogs and cats, and their subsequent abandonment, suffering and death. For the past six years, we have worked with area veterinarians to provide an affordable breeding control program in Garfield County, facilitating countless spay/neuter procedures.

Dove Fund Spay and Neuter Assistance Program
Colorado Animal Rescue has partnered with many local veterinarians to offer residents of Garfield County financial assistance to cover the costs of spaying/neutering their pets. This program is known as the Dove Fund.
The recommended age for spay/neutering is 2-6 months of age.
Female animals should be spayed before their first heat (estrus cycle.) They do not need to have a litter before spaying.
For more information or assistance in having your pet spayed/neutered please contact Colorado Animal Rescue at (970) 947-9173.
