Colorado Animal Rescue is seeking a Director of Operations to fill a fun and rewarding position on our Leadership Team.  The Operations Director oversees the shelter as team leader, director of culture & environment, head animal ambassador, and socially conscious sheltering expert.  The Operations Director is someone with excellent communication and people skills, experience managing employees and business operations, who loves animals, and is excited to make a difference in the lives of homeless pets and the health of our community.  

Colorado Animal Rescue is a non-profit organization in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. We manage an animal shelter and adoption facility that serves all of Garfield County and the City of Glenwood Springs.  On any given day we are providing nutrition, medical care, enrichment and love to 30 – 50 homeless pets.   Our team is comprised of 15 hard working employees who each play a vital role in creating positive outcomes for lost and homeless pets.  

Purpose:

Responsible for the direction of Colorado Animal Rescue—s animal shelter operations. Lead and collaborate on strategic goals while working with the leadership team to creatively meet all shelter operations needs. Ensure every animal sheltered and patron served, receives optimal care and attention. 

Responsibilities:

Leadership Expectations

  • Collaborate daily with C.A.R.E.—s Executive Director, Board of Directors, Programs Director, Development Director and Assistant Operations Manager to effectively engage the organization—s core values, mission, and vision 
  • Carry these community focused values, goals, and initiatives into Team Culture & Staffing, Volunteer Engagement, Program Implementation and Shelter Facility Maintenance

Supervise Shelter Staffing & Team Culture

  • Lead a positive team culture reflecting C.A.R.E.—s core values
  • Mentor & work closely with departmental supervisors and Assistant Operations Manager
  • Oversee the shelter hourly payroll budget, maintaining fiscal responsibility and the effective use of donor and partner contributions 
  • Monitor team engagement & work environment to maintain organizational core values within team culture
  • Assess all staffing needs, recruit and hire for available positions, provide effective onboarding and training
  • Track & report all payroll, employee benefits, vacation time, and sick leave 
  • Conduct regular evaluations, quarterly check-ins, 90-Day reviews
  • Maintain effective & fun employee wellness programs & initiatives
  • Guide effective conflict resolution

Volunteer Management

  • Mentor and work closely with the Volunteer Coordinator to maximum volunteer satisfaction 
  • Direct effective volunteer recruitment, training, scheduling, management and engagement within the shelter
  • Track & report volunteer statistics, effectiveness, and areas of opportunity 

Shelter Supplies & Inventory

  • Oversee the Shelter Operating Budget, monitoring expenses, supply inventory, and future needs
  • Maintain effective ordering & inventory systems with the help of the Shelter Operations Manager

Shelter Repair & Maintenance

  • Oversee the Shelter Repair & Maintenance Budget
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Operations Manager to monitor shelter sanitation protocols, cleaning schedules, ensuring all PACFA requirements are followed without exception
  • Support the shelter Medical Team in ensuring all animal housing and shelter cleaning/sanitation practices are effective in disease prevention
  • Conduct monthly shelter inspections to prioritize cleaning, repair & maintenance, and capital improvement needs
  • Schedule routine & seasonal maintenance
  • Schedule emergency repairs

Animal Care

  • Direct effective daily care, nutrition, medication, housing, enrichment, and behavior modification routines and initiatives to provide excellent care for all shelter pets
  • Provide influence & direction leading to positive animal outcomes
  • Exceed all PACFA guidelines for animal care
  • Oversee shelter intake policy & procedure
  • Monitor shelter pet advertising, marketing, and community engagement to lower animal length of stay and place animals in loving homes 

Customer Service

  • Role model & coach positive customer experiences based on C.A.R.E.—s Core Values
  • Provide influence and direction focused on removing barriers to adoption & program services, increasing client engagement and pet ownership success

  • Serve the needs of animals in our care
  • Place shelter animals into new loving homes
  • Engage with pet owners, adopters, and supporters to meet their needs
  • Offer community support programming

Work Conditions and Physical Requirements

Performs work primarily in an office setting. Potentially prolonged periods of sitting and repetitive motion. May work in an area with a high noise level. Potentially subject to animal bites and scratches. Exposure to cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, animal dander, and feces. Occasional lifting with reasonable accommodation.

Compensation

 $63,000 – $68,000 (starting pay commensurate with market, experience, and equity)

Requirements

Required

  • Bachelor—s degree or equivalent work experience
  • 3 or more years of management experience

Preferred

  • Knowledge of veterinary care/animal health
  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) candidates encouraged to apply
  • Animal Shelter or Non Profit leadership experience
